One can never fully anticipate the beauty of a flower that hasn’t yet blossomed. The tiniest bud holds immeasurable potential to be delicate, intricate, bold, fragrant, soft… Flowers are mysterious and open to interpretation.

So too is the Lotus Link sequence. As a budding flower’s potential is unknown, you may find your own direction to be mysterious and the practice itself open to interpretation. The sequence offers both an introspective journey through your mind and personality, as well as a barometer for gauging how your body responds to each pose as you practice time and again. The slightest change in the placement of the hands or feet will completely alter the expression of this bewitching practice.

Lotus Link is the breath-body link. It calls to mind the blossoming of a flower. As your arms lift and wrists cross, your hands form the bud of the blossom. On the descent, your arms unfurl and delicate hands open gently and extend to reveal the beauty within and release that gentle energy into the universe.

“Feeling the body at ease with the movement of the breath,” Kate says.

As you move through the diagonal flat back and forward fold, you can feel the impact of a gentle breeze on the bloom. You move with the breeze; but there is a point at which there is resistance in the body, and this is where you must hold your ground. A flower is delicate, yet strong as it holds its place in the world.

Upward facing plank is powerful and energizing. The open flower stretches its center to the sun. Warmth is generated in the expression of this pose. There is detail and intricacy in the placement of the hands and rotation of the shoulders. The head and neck release, but not completely, this must be controlled beauty in order to protect the base of the plant!

A gracious forward fold draws the energy inward once again. Bound angle feels easy and gentle. As if you are the lotus flower, floating on the water. Forward fold is to contain this beautiful energy at your center before you rise, more balanced, more stable, more aware of your own grace and merit.

Savasana is a more supple moment. The lift of the body into bridge is smooth and fluid. Legs extend with a longer line, and as your arms wrap around them, there is appreciation for their strength and elegance. Feel delicate and strong, intricate, yet simple. You are beautiful and mysterious, a budding flower with many blossoming moments ahead, and a world around you ready to embrace that energy. You have seen your potential, found your boundaries, and expressed your ability to embrace both.

“To meet yourself face-to-face, without expectation,” Kate says. “Such freedom can exist.”
