Though the dry, cool and changing energy of fall doesn't instantly draw one towards the idea of enjoying a cold smoothie, there are times and reasons for still incorporating them into your diet on occasion during the Vata season. If you are aPitta  and feel as though your energy is running a bit off kilter, a green smoothie may be just the thing to cool you down and bring you back in balance. If dashing off to a physical activity with little time for a meal and proper digestive time following, a smoothie is portable and quickly digested, so you can move into your activity nourished and feeling light and bright!

Here are a few of our favourite smoothie recipes, with some suggestions for making them more appropriate for the Vata season.

Kate's Basic Green Smoothie

(Serves 2)
Chop and add to your blender/juicer/smoothie maker:
  • apple
  • pear
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 2 Cups of spinach (fresh or 1 Cup frozen)
  • 1 fresh basil leaf
Feel free to add water to reach preferred consistency. Blend on low speed for two minutes, then high speed for three.

Namaste Standard Green Power Smoothie

(Serves 1 for a meal or 2 for a dessert/appetizer)
Fill blender with spinach or other greens, then add:
  • 1 Cup (or more to reach desired consistency) liquid such as water, juice or milk
  • 1 scoop protein powder (read labels carefully to avoid high sugar and preservatives)
  • 1/2 Cup fruit such as raspberries and/or bananas
  • optional: sweetener of choice - ours is Stevia
  •  1/8 tsp. xantham gum or guar gum for added smoothness

Vata it Up!

Tailor either of these smoothies for the Vata Season by using kale (a vegetable that holds moisture in the body rather than clearing and cooling), raw yam, cinnamon and or cardamom to counter the cooling energy of the recipes.

The Best Ayurvedic Fall Smoothie

Blend the Following:
  • One apple
  • Two pears
  • 1/2 tsp allspice (blend of cardamom, cloves and fennel)
  • 1 heaping tsp. cinnamon
*Heat, and drink!
