Should you drink more water? Namaste

Are you feeling tired? Do you have a headache? Are you having trouble concentrating? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," then your next question should be: "Am I drinking enough water?"

With no need to worry about additives or calories, water is quite simply the most healthful thing we can consume! Water comprises 60% of the human body, and the benefits to being attentive to your daily needs are numerous.

The Question of Quench

If you are interested in increasing your water intake, you may wonder how much you need.

This question deserves more thought than you might expect. Though rare, it is possible to consume too much water.

Ayurveda's approach to water intake is a departure from our Western standard "eight glasses in eight hours" rule of thumb. As a general rule, the amount of water a person needs is determined by their dosha. Vatas are more likely to experience dry skin and constipation, so they usually need the most water. Pittas benefit from a moderate amount, as too much is said to have the ability to "put out" the Pitta's digestive fire. Kaphas need the least, because they tend to retain water easily. It is also interesting to note that ice water is categorically discouraged for all doshas, since it is considered to cause digestive disruptions. For this reason, water and liquids should be consumed either slightly heated or at room temp.

More or less, warm or hot, we all need water and should be mindful to meet our intake needs every day. We encourage you to use the links we've shared in this post to determine your personal water intake needs. Do you think you can meet your daily requirement?
